Japan Travel FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit Japan?

Citizens of many countries, including the United States and most of Europe, can visit Japan as tourists for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay. Rules differ by nationality and can change, so check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website before you book. If you're unsure, ask us and we'll point you to the right page.

When is the best time to visit Japan?

Spring (late March to April) brings cherry blossoms and autumn (November in Kyoto) brings red maples. They are also the busiest seasons. June and early July are rainy, August is hot and humid, and winter is clear, quiet and wonderful for onsen towns. Every season has something special, and a bespoke itinerary helps you avoid the crowds in all of them.

How long should I spend in Japan?

For a first visit we suggest 10 to 14 days: Tokyo, Kyoto, and one or two other places at a comfortable pace. Shorter trips work well if we focus on one region. Tell us how much time you have and we'll shape the route around it.

How do I get around?

Japan's trains are punctual and easy once you know the basics. For long distances we book the shinkansen (bullet train). In cities, a rechargeable IC card (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA) covers trains, subways, buses and even convenience stores. Since the 2023 price rise, the Japan Rail Pass only pays off on trips with many long journeys, so we calculate whether it's worth it for each itinerary.

What about cash, cards etc?

Cards are widely accepted in cities, but cash is still needed at small restaurants, temples and in the countryside. Japan Post and 7-Eleven ATMs accept most foreign cards.

How do I stay connected?

An eSIM is the easiest option for most phones, and pocket Wi-Fi is a good alternative for groups. Set it up before you fly so you land online. We'll recommend options when we plan your trip.

Can you arrange for dietary needs and allergies?

Yes, with advance notice. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free meals take more planning in Japan, because dashi (fish stock) and soy sauce appear in many dishes. We choose suitable restaurants and communicate your needs in Japanese ahead of time.

Do I have to carry my suitcases from hotel to hotel?

No. Luggage forwarding (takkyubin) sends your bags between hotels, usually arriving the next day, for a modest fee per bag. You travel on trains with a small overnight bag. We arrange it for you.

Is Japan good for children and older travelers?

Yes. Japan is safe, clean and easy to navigate. We adjust the pace, choose experiences that suit every age, and use private transport where it makes the day easier.
